Meridia Side Effects
Meridia weight loss pills (sibutramine) have been associated to
potentially fatal and serious Meridia side effects. Meridia side
effects information warns patients of primary pulmonary hypertension
(PPH), a rare and sometimes fatal disease. Accompanied by a feeling
of constant breathlessness with minimal exertion, fatigue, dizzy
spells, fainting, and chest pain, PPH causes high blood pressure
in the lungs. There is no known cause of PPH, but it has been the
dangerous result of Meridia side effects and other prescription
drug reactions. Instances of PPH are still surfacing in the former
weight loss pill Fen Phen, despite its 1997 FDA ban because of the
latency period between weight loss pill intake and the surfacing
of disease symptoms.
Other Meridia side effects include, cardiac valve dysfunction,
or heart valve disease. Valves in the heart allow blood flow backwards
through them when heart valve disease is present. The most common
Meridia side effects experienced are headaches, dry mouth, anorexia,
constipation, and insomnia.
There have now been 29 U.S. Meridia (sibutramine) causing deaths
and hundreds of serious Meridia side effects. Since Meridia's entrance
to the U.S. market, 8 million people have taken the weight loss
pill. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen, viewed FDA documents
linking the weight loss pill to almost 400 serious and bad Meridia
side effects from February 1998- September 2001. Public Citizen
is the consumer advocacy group responsible for filing the March
19, 2002 petition asking the FDA to immediately ban Meridia.
Meridia (sibutramine) is sold in 70 countries and has been used
by 8.5 million people worldwide. Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer
of Meridia, has admitted that at least 32 Meridia side effects patients
have died while taking the diet drug. Italy first reacted to the
Meridia side effects after two cardiovascular deaths and 50 reports
of health related problems were made. Italys temporary suspension
of the drug due to Meridia side effects led to a Europe wide safety
review of the diet drug. In Britain, two deaths were attributed
to the use of sibutramine and 103 total serious adverse Meridia
side effects reports were made in France and in Great Britain alone.
Britains Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin published last December
warning of the limited benefits Meridia can provide along with unwanted
Meridia side effects that have led to the deaths of dozens of people.
Individuals with existing coronary artery disease, congestive heart
failure, or high blood pressure is advised not to take the diet
drug because of the increased high risk of dangerous Meridia side
effects. Health Canada is also conducting an investigation of Meridia
because of the 28 Meridia side effects reported.
