Meridia (sibutramine) was described as just “moderately effective” at helping patients lose weight by the FDA. Meridia weight loss pill has been attributed to life threatening instances of heart complications after initially being voted on 5-4 by the FDA’s advisory committee against approval. One year later, the FDA overruled the committee and Meridia was approved. While Abbott states they are very confident their diet drug Meridia will not be taken off the market, Sidney Wolfe of Public Citizen predicts otherwise.
