The Public Citizen consumer group has called upon the FDA once again for the immediate ban of Meridia diet pill from the market. Originally calling upon the agency to ban Meridia in a March 2002 petition, the watchdog group has been critical of the failure to take adequate safety actions. With “new evidence of a rapidly growing number of deaths and serious adverse reactions” linked to Meridia, Public Citizen believes there is “no justification in continuing to market a drug that provides minimal weight reduction while increasing the likelihood of injury and death” (citizen.org 9/3/03).

The group added that the original 2002 petition did not address the effect Meridia can have on a developing fetus. According to new analysis, Meridia has been linked to spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and congenital malformations, including heart and central nervous system in the fetus when Meridia is used with pregnant women. During animal studies before Meridia was approved, the same link between Meridia use and developing fetus impacts were witnessed. Read More....

Meridia Approval
Meridia’s (sibutramine) 1997 approval was called “moderately effective” at helping patients lose weight by the FDA. The weight loss pill has been attributed to life threatening instances of heart complications after initially being voted on 5-4 by the FDA’s advisory committee against approval. One year later, the FDA overruled the committee and Meridia was approved. While Abbott states they are very confident their diet drug Meridia will not be taken off the market, Sidney Wolfe of Public Citizen predicts otherwise.
Effects of Obesity
Although the nation appears obsessed with diet and exercise, obesity is on the rise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified that obesity affects nearly one in five Americans. Pharmaceutical companies have capitalized on the dieting Americans that spent $1.8 billion in weight loss pills in 2000 alone. Meridia (sibutramine) has been used by 8 million people since its 1997 FDA approval.

Withdrawal of Meridia
In early March 2002, the Italian government pulled Meridia weight loss pill (sibutramine) from the market after two deaths were associated with its use. Other European governments are now reviewing Meridia. In France and the United Kingdom there have been more than 100 serious Meridia adverse reactions and two deaths.

Meridia Stats
Studies performed on the diet drug Meridia show an average 6.5 lbs is lost in a year’s time, and during the second year the majority of people regain the weight and gain the entire weight back if stopping drug use.

Meridia Dangers Recognized
The Public Citizen consumer advocacy group works to ban or re-label unsafe or ineffective drugs and medical devices; improve safety standards at work sites; and educate consumers about the health care services they receive by providing information about doctors disciplined by state medical boards, hospital cesarean section rates, how to obtain your medical records, and dispute resolution in Medicare HMOs. Since 1996, Public Citizen has petitioned for the removal of four other FDA approved drugs, including another diet drug. Three of the drugs were banned and one was severely restricted. The evidence that the drugs endangered the lives of those prescribed to take them contained “clear evidence of danger before their FDA approval” according to Public Citizen, which they have also seen in Meridia.
